During the 1930’s Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man – the humble Wing Chun Master is the most skilled martial artist in Foshan, Southern China where martial art schools recruit disciples and compete against each other aggressively. However, instead of taking in any disciples, Ip spends his days in training, meeting friends and with his family. Though keeps a low profile, people in Foshan give much respect to him as he demonstrates strong competence in friendly and closed-door competitions. His reputation goes further when he defeats a highly skilled master from Northern China, thus upholding the pride of martial artists of the Southern China.
